Some Things you Should be Aware of
Custom Drums is the heart of what we do. We do carry a small inventory for aspiring artists to experience what custom drum work is.
Our drums are built without templates, varnished with oil, hand sanded and matched with drum heads we have found the most experience with. So, if you’re a professional drummer, short haul touring artist, weekender, starter or hobbyist, there will NEVER be another drum build to the same specs. This also leads us to our bold sound of punch, pop and resonance.
Common Sizes
We build drums of all sizes, but commonly see:
- 4”x12” Snare
- 5.5”x13 Snare
- 3”x13” piccolo snare
- 5.5”x14 Snare
- But we can build any dimensions you’re looking for
When it comes to drum sets, the options are endless. Four-piece shell pack (or add a snare), three-piece or five-piece
Wood When Available is Size Dependent
- Maple (routinely available)
- Birch
- Birdseye Maple
- Flamed Mape
- Walnut
- Oak
- And others…just check in…
Wood Hoops
Our metals are made of steel and nickel from hoops and lugs. Our hoops are made of the same woods above (most routinely maple)
Cost- Wood Shell
Costs are based on market current market prices.
Our Process
We seek to use oil stains and applications to keep the drum shell as resonate as possible. There is another section on science, but wraps, paints and shackle finish only turn your wood drum into a dead steel shell.
Science wrap (More Science in the Science Tab)
Custom Painting Job
Against our advisement (we advise oil), we will consider custom shop painting work. It is clear to note that we do not do the work for custom shop drum painting. We outsource this work and pass the cost straight to you.

NEW: Drums that have been built new, pictured, and put in boxes for shipping. In some instances, we make brief demo videos and sound samples of new drums, so you might find a few stick marks. New drums come with our full manufacturer’s warranty.
Here re different cuts on hit shell they created more of a punch and beep depth in which we cut for our shelves.
NEW-DEMO: Drums that have been on display. Folks have been allowed to test play--but not abuse, but the drums haven’t been out of the shop. You might notice a few stick marks and a smattering of 100-year-old-building dust, and you'll get the benefit of the full new warranty.
BACKLINE: Drums that have been played on stage. One of Craft Drum Company’s main ways of getting the word out is to put drums in the hands of high school and college students and on stage at festivals and events, providing a kit for that benefit concert, or renting a kit to a touring band for an evening's show. All BACKLINE items share the facts that they've been well-maintained in-house, and they come with our warranty as though they were new, excluding minor cosmetic signs of use, for less fundage than new builds.
USED: Drums that have been owned by someone else in the past. Although "Used" can mean something cared for like a newborn baby or an unplayed/returned gift all the way to barely salvageable, all USED drums share the fact that they don't come with our manufacturer's warranty.

CRAFT DRUM COMPANY – THE SCIENCE OF OUR SOUND
1) Resonance
The science of drum resonance is complex and involves the vibration of the drumhead, the drum's shell, and the acoustics of the room.
2) Here are some key aspects of drum resonance
- Drumhead vibration
- When a drumhead is struck, it vibrates and forces air molecules to compress and decompress, which creates sound waves. The frequency of the vibration is measured in Hertz (Hz).
- Resonant drumhead
- The bottom head of a drum is called the resonant head because it resonates with the vibrations from the top head, or batter head. The air column inside the drum bounces back and forth between the two heads, which keeps them vibrating and creates a longer sound. This is the concept of variable resonance of off-set lugs.
- Drum shells are huge and ALL forms of wood have their own sound.
- The volume of the drum's shell affects its resonant frequency. A larger, deeper shell produces a lower frequency and a thicker, heavier tone, while a smaller, shallower shell produces a higher frequency and a brighter, lighter tone.
- Drum tuning…’thud’ or ‘pop’…drum heads are the finesse of pitch and tone.
- Room acoustics should always be taken into consideration. Where is the sound going? What is it bouncing off of? What is it being absorbed by? Do you need accessories like gels to reduce acoustic carry?
- The drumhead vibration science is complex — it's not just about the strike, but also about how the drumhead resonates.
- The primary role of the drum is to resonate with the vibration of the head. The larger the volume of the resonating body, the lower the characteristic frequency, and the easier it is to resonate in the lower frequency band, while the smaller the volume, the easier it is to resonate in the higher frequency band.
3) The tone, sustain, and projection of a drum is affected by the shape of the shell.
The primary role of the drum is to resonate with the vibration of the head. The larger the volume of the resonating body, the lower the characteristic frequency, and the easier it is to resonate in the lower frequency band, while the smaller the volume, the easier it is to resonate in the higher frequency band. In other words, the larger the diameter, or the deeper the shell, the thicker and heavier the tone, and the smaller or shallower the shell, the brighter and lighter the tone.
Drummers select drums with certain diameters or depths to match the style of music they perform, and they tune the drum heads to their liking to express a rainbow of tonal qualities in their music.
4) And long lugs...long lugs only inhibit the resonance of the shell by resonating the shell too far down into the drum. The natural head and lug vibration keeps the tonight tight.
5) And lastly, Drum Wraps can negatively affect the sound of a drum if they are not adhered properly to the drum shell:
- If the wrap is not fully adhered to the shell, it can create friction as the shell vibrates, which can decrease the drum's vibration and sustain.
- Dampening naturally occurs when you put a ‘coat’ on a drum shell.
- If the wrap is attached with tape, it can dampen the sound of the shell, similar to wrapping a blanket around it.
- Adhesive can stifle drum resonance
- However, if the wrap is glued to the shell, it becomes part of the shell and resonates with it, resulting in a better sound.
6) Other areas of our philosophy...
- Painted shells are like condoms...and no one likes condoms…they unnaturally weigh down and compress the shell and the resonance.
- Mounting. All mounts change the tune of a drum (on the tom and on the bass). We recommend drums on stands, not the traditional 'hook' mounts.

Before We get Into It
Hand-Crafted Drum: All drums are hand-crafted. There are not templates there are no pre-cut designs…every drum is one-of-one. And, while it is rare, there are some blemishes, sometimes by alignment by a few degrees, for example. This does NOT hurt the sound of the drum. Every-single-drum is tested before leaving the shop.
Our Process: Sand, oil varnish, cover in finishing tape, cutting, removing finish tape, sand, re-stain, re-gloss if not satin buff shell, re-assessable, polish, box and on it the way to you!
